How The LT-55 XL Laser Templator works (Digital Templating)

News, Support No Comments

Many people ask us how the LT-55 XL works. They are just amazed at the accuracy that it provide the users. We have overheard many people who have used it simply say “its magic” or “its all voodoo to me.” But the concept really isn’t as hard to comprehend as you might imaging.

The LT-55 XL Laser Templator is made up of 3 basic components.

  1. The laser uses light to measure distance. The laser beam is emitted from the laser and hits a point on any surface. It then reflects the light and is received back at the laser. During this process, the laser keeps track of the amount of time (in milliseconds) it takes to be received back. This distance is accurate up to 1/16″.
  2. The encoder is a device that rotates and determines angles. By rotating it, with the laser directly positioned above the encoder, from one position to another and angle can be measured. There is an accuracy of .009° in the encoder.
  3. The tablet PC is a computer that has touch screen capabilities. In the software, measurements of distance from the laser and angles from the encoder are combined to draw basic geometric shapes like squares, rectangles or circles (counter tops/cabinet bases, pipes etc). This geometry creates to scale CAD (Computer Aided Design) drawings of cabinet bases or counter tops.

After the CAD drawings are produced by the LT-55 XL Laser Templator, they are used by the fabricator/manufacturer produce precisely sized counter tops.

Although anyone could take a laser, encoder and a computer and do this, the real secret comes from the software. The software that runs the LT-55 XL was specifically designed to be easy to use. We all know there are some of us that are CAD experts and there are some of us that fear all the icons and functions they see when they first open any CAD program. We specifically set out to eliminate that fear.

The software that is continually being developed is without a doubt “so easy a caveman can do it.” Sorry about that. What I should have said is that it is so easy anyone can do it. At trade shows we attend, our sales reps will specifically ask groups from companies who their least tech savy person in the group/company is. The reason we do this is not to belittle anyone but t show that with very little direction, anyone can be a digital templating master. We have had sons and daughters younger than 10 years old and elderly people over 70 years old templating in minutes, and these tend to be the groups of people that have very little computer knowledge.

If you don’t believe us, head over to our testimonials page and see what everyone else is saying. If you have any questions, please give us a call at 866-679-1300. We would love to answer any questions you have.
